5 Best Hair Vitamins

  • Emily R.
  • 3 minute read

We all know that hair loss is a common sign of aging among women, and it can often make us feel self-conscious and anxious. Hair loss can be attributed to a number of root causes, from genetics to hormonal changes (think child birth or menopause), and even COVID.

No matter the cause, you’ll want to fight your battle against hair loss from the inside out. “Vitamins are essential for healthy hair growth and may help in preventing hair shedding and thinning,” says a New York City-based cosmetic dermatologist we spoke with. So what vitamins should you be taking to ensure you never have another bad hair day?

Here are our favorites:

1. Routine Wellness Hair Vitamins

Routine Wellness Hair Vitamins are made with patented ingredients that have been clinically proven to increase hair thickness and grow more hair. Simply put, we loved this supplement the most out of all the ones we tried, because we thought it had a fast and noticeable effect on our hair.

Why did Routine Wellness Supplement have a more dramatic effect than everything else? The ingredients that Routine uses are actually unique as compared to any other hair vitamins we found on the market. For instance, rather than using D-biotin that most other companies use, Routine uses magnesium biotinate. This form of biotin is 40x more absorbable than traditional biotin, which means it will be much more effective in improving growth and thickness. Routine Hair Supplement also contains ingredients like kelp minerals, black pepper extract, and ashwagandha, which are believed to help prevent hair breakage and increase thickness.

Simply put, we swear by this product, and according to the reviews that the product is getting, so do many other people (read the reviews here). The product has a money-back guarantee too. For us, the hardest part about the Routine regimen was remembering to take two capsules a day every day. While they don’t have any taste or smell, there was a bit of pill fatigue on our part. We wish they had been in gummy form rather than pills.

2. Viviscal Supplements

Viviscal has been around for a really long time, so you may already be familiar with it. We love that Viviscal has 25 years of history behind it, but that type of legacy is also why we think a product that has been formulated more recently like Routine Wellness may be better.  Viviscal contains some great ingredients including iron and horsetail extract, but there is only 120 mcg of biotin and it is not magnesium biotinate. In addition, they use flavors in the vitamins, and so this earned our #2 spot.

3. Hair La Vie

Hair La Vie Clinical Formula is a nutrient dense supplement that works hard to promote healthy hair using the power of total body nutrition. We love that it has collagen in it, although it only has half the biotin that Routine has in it.  The price is also on par with the others on our list but the packaging could use some work.

4. Vital Proteins Hair Boost

This hair supplement from one of our favorite collagen brands is designed to help thicken fine hair in as little as two weeks. That’s…really fast!  Its blend of vitamins and minerals, including zinc, biotin, amino acids, and saw palmetto extract is great for targeting hair loss.

5. Hair Essentials

Hair Essentials Natural Hair Growth by Natural Wellbeing took our #5 spot. Like others on the list, it has some great ingredients like saw palmetto, Horsetail herb extract and black pepper seed extract.  However, it is missing some key ingredients we believe would be helpful like biotin, and requiring 3 pills a day can induce a lot of pill fatigue.
